Staff Drills That Build Better Movement
Aug 16, 2026Most people try to get faster before they get coordinated.
That's backwards.
Your body can't move well under pressure until your brain knows what to do. Speed without structure just means you fail faster.
That's why staff drills start with the base of support, not the strike.
Take away someone's legs, meaning sit them down or have them kneel, and now the only way to block an attack is to rotate through the hips, spine, and shoulders. No stepping to bail you out. No footwork to hide bad structure.
The brain adapts, the upper body learns to move, and when you stand back up, that rotation carries over. You're faster, smoother, more automatic.
Add an attacker behind you, and now you're training the OODA loop: observe, orient, decide, act - on demand, with no warning.
You don't need speed to learn this. You need reps.
Mark breaks down exactly how to build this progression, drill by drill in today's video..
